Does construction adhesive expire?
Loctite gives PL Premium 12 months from the date of manufacture and PL Premium MAX 18 — and once a cartridge has been opened it cures on air moisture, so the honest opened answer is weeks, not months.

Sealed: 12–18 months Tier 1
Loctite's data sheet for PL Premium, the polyurethane cartridge, lists 12 months from date of manufacture, unopened. PL Premium MAX, a silane-modified polymer, gets 18. Both clocks start at the factory rather than at purchase, and both sheets print the lot code key so you can work out where a cartridge sits in its window.

After opening: Weeks at best Tier 1
Loctite's own sentence explains why there is no comfortable number here: the product cures with exposure to moisture. Cut the nozzle and the adhesive at the tip starts setting on the humidity in the room, and the cure works back down the nozzle into the cartridge. Henkel's after-the-job instruction is unusually detailed for exactly this reason — seal the nozzle tightly with aluminum foil, wrap the foil tight and tape it, and a smear of petroleum jelly around the opening first makes a better seal.
How to tell it's gone off
- A hard plug in the nozzle that has to be dug out — the adhesive cured where it met damp air.
- A bead that comes out lumpy and ropey instead of smooth and even.
- Adhesive stiff enough that the gun trigger takes real force, on a cartridge that used to flow.
- A cartridge that has gone rigid through the tube when squeezed.
- Read the lot code printed on the cartridge against the window — the decoder is below.
If you use it anyway
Equipment damage
This is the lane's most expensive quiet failure. Construction adhesive is used behind things — subfloor panels, tub surrounds, stair treads, trim — and a part-cured cartridge lays a bead that grips at the edges and nowhere in the middle. You find out when the floor squeaks or the panel drums, and by then it is under fasteners, tile and finish, so putting it right means taking the assembly apart.
Both of these adhesives are designed to set on water vapor rather than by drying, which is what lets them cure inside a joint with no air. That same design is what kills an opened cartridge: the humidity in an ordinary room is enough to start the reaction at the cut nozzle, and it does not stop. What you get after a few weeks is a solid plug in the nozzle and, behind it, adhesive that is part-way through curing — still soft enough to gun out, no longer capable of reaching full strength.
Every page here commits to one of four states — Harmless · Degraded performance · Equipment damage · Safety issue. How the verdicts work.
How to store it
Henkel's storage block: not damaged by freezing, stored at standard conditions defined as 72°F ± 4°F and under 50% relative humidity. The part worth copying is what it says for a cartridge you have already opened — seal the nozzle tightly with aluminum foil, wrap the foil tightly around the nozzle and seal it with tape, and applying petroleum jelly around the opening before the foil creates a more airtight seal. The enemy is moisture, so every step is about keeping air off the adhesive.
Reading the Loctite PL Premium MAX date code
Loctite prints a lot code on the cartridge. On PL Premium MAX it is five digits: the first two are the year of manufacture and the last three are the day of that year, so 18060 is the 60th day of 2018. The plain PL Premium cartridge uses a shorter variant of the same idea — a single digit for the year followed by the three-digit day, buried in a longer string like HE9038R302, where 9038 is the 38th day of 2019.
| Printed code | Made on |
|---|---|
| 18060 | March 1, 2018 |
| 21125 | May 5, 2021 |
The decoded day is what's printed on the container — it tells you the product's age, nothing about this page. More formats.
