Does epoxy expire?

The two makers point opposite ways: WEST SYSTEM calls 3 years for resin and 2 for hardener a minimum, Gorilla calls two years a maximum — and it is the hardener, not the resin, that decides.

WEST SYSTEM's minimum shelf life is three years after the manufacture date for resins and two years for hardeners, and it is a floor rather than a ceiling — the figure is set by how long the maker keeps a quality control sample from each batch. Gorilla states the opposite kind of number for its consumer syringe: shelf life for Gorilla Epoxy is a maximum of two years. Read the two together and the honest sealed window is 2 to 3 years, with the hardener as the shorter-lived half.

Opening epoxy does not start a fast clock the way opening a cartridge does, because the adhesive is not activated until resin and hardener come into contact with one another — Gorilla's words. What an opened container loses instead is cleanliness: WEST SYSTEM asks for containers kept closed to prevent contamination, and Gorilla's warning about the syringe is that the notch on the cap has to line up with the notch on the tip so the two parts cannot meet in the nozzle.

How to tell it's gone off


  • Resin that has gone milky or cloudy with sugar-like crystals in it — WEST SYSTEM says that happens when resin is stored below 50°F.
  • Hardener that has darkened from straw toward reddish or purple; on its own, WEST SYSTEM says color does not change its physical properties.
  • Hardener that has thickened noticeably, or gives off a stronger ammonia-like smell than a fresh bottle.
  • Resin that is visibly more viscous than it was — WEST SYSTEM names increased resin viscosity as the main change with age.
  • A syringe whose two chambers have leaked into each other around the tip, or a cap that will not seat because there is cured material in the nozzle.

If you use it anyway

Epoxy is the one in this lane worth being strict about. Resin and hardener are stable while they are apart, but hardener loses activity as it ages, and an epoxy that cures slow or short of full strength fails on the repair itself — under load, later, once the part is back in service and nobody is watching it. WEST SYSTEM draws its own line here: for anything structural, use resin less than three years past the date of manufacture and hardener less than two.

Why it goes off — CRYSTALLIZATION & HARDENER AGING

Epoxy has two halves that age differently. Resin is very stable; its main change over years is that it gets thicker, and if it is stored below about 50°F it can crystallize — WEST SYSTEM describes it going milky or cloudy, with crystals in it. Hardener is the reactive half, and it is the one with the shorter published life: over long storage it darkens, thickens and gives off a stronger ammonia-like odor, and WEST SYSTEM notes that physical properties reduce slightly with age. A darker color on its own is not the fault — WEST SYSTEM says hardeners, especially its 205 Fast Hardener, may darken with age without their physical properties being affected.

How to store it


WEST SYSTEM's storage rule is two sentences long: store epoxy resin and hardener at room temperature, and keep containers closed to prevent contamination. Room temperature is doing real work there — below about 50°F resin can crystallize, so an unheated shed is the wrong shelf. Gorilla adds the syringe habit: wipe the tip clean after each use, and seat the cap with its notch lined up against the notch on the tip so the two sides cannot reach each other.
