Does silicone sealant expire?
GE prints 18 months from the date of manufacture on the data sheet and a use-by date on the cartridge itself — and once that cartridge is opened, silicone starts curing from the nozzle inward and the useful life drops to weeks.

GE's technical data sheet for Supreme Silicone Window & Door sealant states a shelf life of 18 months from the date of manufacture, unopened, and notes that a use-by date is printed on the cartridge or on the crimping of the squeeze tube. GE's own FAQ gives the range across its line: an unopened tube typically lasts 12 to 18 months. Elevated temperatures or extreme cold will cut that short.
After opening: Weeks Tier 1
A neutral-cure silicone sets on the moisture in ordinary room air, so cutting the nozzle starts a reaction that does not pause between jobs. GE's advice for a cartridge already opened is to push a screw or nail into the nozzle and wrap the tip tightly in foil or plastic — a plug and a barrier, because air is the problem. Even done well, the tip cures first and the cure creeps back into the cartridge.
How to tell it's gone off
- A rubbery plug in the nozzle — silicone cures from the tip inward once air reaches it.
- Sealant that will not come out smoothly under normal gun pressure. GE's line is that if it feels rubbery or will not come out smoothly, the tube is finished.
- A bead that skins almost immediately and tears rather than tooling smooth.
- A squeeze tube that has gone hard in the middle when pressed.
- Check the use-by date printed on the cartridge, or on the crimped end of the squeeze tube.
If you use it anyway
Equipment damage
Silicone that has gone off is a water problem on a delay. Its entire job is a continuous, well-adhered bead between a tub and a wall or a window and a frame, and a part-cured tube lays a bead that skins before it can be tooled, never properly wets the surface, and pulls away at the corners within months. The damage is not the wasted tube — it is the water that gets behind a seal everybody assumed was working.
Silicone sealant is a liquid polymer that cross-links into rubber when it meets water vapor — that is why a bead skins in half an hour on a humid day and takes longer in dry cold. Sealed in a foil-lined cartridge there is nothing for it to react with. Open it and the reaction begins at the cut nozzle and works inward, so the cartridge fills from the front with rubber. What is left behind that plug is part-way cured: it can still be forced out, but it skins too fast to tool, does not wet the surfaces properly, and never reaches the adhesion the fresh product would.

How to store it
GE's storage block is precise: not damaged by freezing, but store unopened containers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks and direct sunshine, under standard conditions defined as 72°F ± 4°F and under 50% relative humidity — elevated or extreme cold temperatures will reduce shelf life. If a tube has been somewhere cold, GE asks for 24 hours at room temperature before use. For a cartridge already opened, GE's own trick is a screw or nail in the nozzle with the tip wrapped tightly in foil or plastic, stored upright.
