Tier 2, and how to read it yourself

How to read an SDS storage section

Every product on this site has a safety data sheet, and two of its sixteen sections answer real questions about a container that has been sitting for a while. Here is how to find the sheet, and where to look once you have it.

What an SDS is, and why every product here has one


A safety data sheet is the standardized hazard document that travels with a chemical product. Under OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, the manufacturer or importer of a hazardous chemical has to produce one, keep it current, and make it available — and the format is fixed: 16 numbered sections, always in the same order, whoever wrote the document. Section 7 is section 7 on a can of brake cleaner and on a jug of pool acid.

That fixed order is what makes an SDS usable by somebody who is not a chemist. You do not read it front to back. You go to a number.

This site cites SDS sections as Tier 2 — behind the manufacturer's own technical data sheet or product FAQ, which is Tier 1, and ahead of trade and standards literature, which is Tier 3. The reason is narrow. An SDS is written for hazard communication, not for shelf life, so it almost never states a window in months. What it does state, reliably and in the manufacturer's own words, is the conditions that window assumes and what the product turns into when those conditions are not met.

Finding the sheet


  • Start at the manufacturer's own site. Most have a documents, literature or "safety data sheets" page with a product search. That copy is the current one, and it is the only copy the manufacturer stands behind.
  • If the site search fails, search the web for "SDS" plus the exact product name plus the manufacturer's name. Third-party aggregators host copies and they are often several revisions behind.
  • Match the variant, not just the brand. The concentrate and the ready-to-use bottle are different formulations with different sheets, and so are the same product sold in different countries.
  • Check the revision date on the sheet — usually in the header or in section 16. A sheet from two formulation changes ago describes a product you are not holding.
  • Save what you read. Sheets get revised and re-hosted constantly, and a link that worked last spring often will not work now. This site keeps a copy of every document it cites and prints the day it was read.

Section 7 — handling and storage


Section 7 comes in two halves. Skip the handling half; it is written for somebody using the product at work, in volume, wearing gear. The storage half is the sentence this site is actually after.

Allowing for house style, it reads something like: store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks, open flame and direct sunlight; keep container tightly closed; keep away from incompatible materials. Sometimes there is a stated temperature range, and when there is, that range is the most useful number on the whole sheet. It is the manufacturer telling you, in writing, what its shelf-life claim assumes.

What to take from it, in order:

  • The temperature range, if one is given. Everything else on the page is qualitative.
  • Whether the sheet says to protect the product from freezing. That single clause is the difference between a product that survives an unheated garage and one that does not.
  • Whether it names ventilation, sunlight or moisture specifically. Named conditions are the ones the manufacturer has actually seen go wrong.
  • Whether the closure is called out. "Keep container tightly closed" is why the opened window on a product page here is shorter than the sealed one — often by years.

The storage line on every product page on this site is a paraphrase of that sentence, with the document and the day it was read printed underneath it. Where a label and a sheet disagree, the page says so rather than picking one.

Section 10 — stability and reactivity


Section 10 is the one nobody reads and the one that explains why old products behave badly. It has a fixed set of subheadings, and each is a short answer to a specific question:

  • Chemical stability — whether the product is stable in ordinary storage. "Stable under recommended storage conditions" is the usual answer, and the conditional half of that sentence is the half that matters.
  • Conditions to avoid — heat, sunlight, freezing, moisture, mechanical shock. The same list section 7 gave you, restated as causes rather than as rules.
  • Incompatible materials — what the product must never be stored with or combined with. Strong oxidizers, acids, bases, ammonia, certain metals. Never store two containers together just because they are the same shape.
  • Hazardous decomposition products — what the product becomes as it breaks down. This is the line that decides several verdicts on this site, and it is worth reading slowly.
  • Possibility of hazardous reactions — usually "will not occur" under normal conditions, and worth a second look on the sheets where it does not say that.

Section 10 is why aging is not always a quiet failure. A product whose decomposition line reads "oxides of carbon" has a boring old age: it stops working and that is the end of it. A product whose decomposition line names a gas you would not want building up in a closed shed has a different one, and the verdict on its page says so plainly and stops there.

What the sheet will not tell you


It will almost never give you a shelf life. There is no line for one. Section 9, physical and chemical properties, gives appearance, odor, pH and flash point — genuinely useful for working out whether the thing in front of you has changed, and useless for a window in months. The window itself comes from Tier 1: the manufacturer's technical data sheet, product FAQ or label statement. Where two manufacturers state different numbers, this site prints both with their names on them.

So: two sections. Seven for the conditions, ten for the consequences. The rest of the sheet is written for other readers — the emergency room, the fire crew, the shipping desk, the workplace safety officer — and this site does not go there.
