Does caulk expire?
DAP's answer is one year from the date of manufacture for most of its caulking products — the shortest sealed window in this lane — and an opened tube is measured in weeks, because the nozzle skins over between jobs.

Sealed: 12 months Tier 1
DAP's data sheet for Alex Fast Dry acrylic latex caulk plus silicone lists a shelf life of 12 months, and its FAQ gives the same answer for the range: one year from the date of manufacture, when stored properly. That is a shorter window than paint, adhesive or silicone, and it is easy to blow through a whole one with a tube bought for a job that got postponed.
After opening: Weeks Tier 1
An acrylic latex caulk dries the same way latex paint does — by losing water — and a cut nozzle is a small open surface. What sets in the nozzle between jobs is a plug, and the caulk behind it keeps losing water past whatever cap or nail you left in there. DAP's instruction is simply to reseal the container for storage and reuse; how well you manage that is the whole difference between weeks and a single afternoon.
How to tell it's gone off
- A skinned plug in the nozzle that keeps re-forming after it is cleared.
- Caulk that guns out crumbly or in a broken rope instead of a smooth bead.
- A cartridge that resists the plunger, or a squeeze tube that feels hard through its middle.
- A bead that tears under the finishing tool instead of tooling smooth.
- A watery layer that separates out at the nozzle before the caulk follows.
If you use it anyway
Degraded performance
Old acrylic caulk fails where you can see it, immediately. It guns out crumbly, will not tool smooth and will not stick, so the bead comes straight back off with a scraper and you start again with a fresh tube. That is a wasted half hour rather than damage — the tube gives itself away at the first squeeze, before the joint is relying on it.
Acrylic latex caulk is a water-borne emulsion filled with calcium carbonate — about 82% solids by weight in DAP's Alex Fast Dry, which means there is not much water holding all of that together. Lose some of it and the paste stiffens; lose enough and the polymer particles fuse into rubber where they sit. That is what the plug in the nozzle is. Freezing does the same thing by a different route, which is why the data sheet bothers to publish a freeze-thaw rating at all: Alex Fast Dry passes 5 cycles under ASTM C1183, and 5 is a limit rather than a promise.

How to store it
DAP's own instruction is the short version — reseal the container for storage and reuse — and the sheet's freeze-thaw line says how much cold the product will forgive: Alex Fast Dry passes 5 freeze-thaw cycles under ASTM C1183. Five is a tested limit, not a license for an unheated garage. Keep tubes indoors, standing upright, with the nozzle plugged, and note that the sheet's stated working range is 40°F to 100°F.
