Does threadlocker expire?

Loctite gives Threadlocker Blue 242 twenty-four months from the date of manufacture, unopened — and publishes no second window for an opened tube, because the same clock keeps running and what changes after opening is contamination, not time.

Loctite's data sheet for Threadlocker Blue 242 lists a shelf life of 24 months from date of manufacture, unopened. The date that counts is stamped on the tube, not on the receipt, so a tube that sat in a distributor's warehouse arrives with part of its window already spent. Optimal storage on the same sheet is between 46°F and 70°F.

Loctite publishes one window for threadlocker and it starts at manufacture, not at first use — there is no separate opened figure to quote. What opening the tube changes is exposure: the instruction on the sheet is to close the tube tightly after each use and to store the product in the unopened container in a dry location, and the risk it is guarding against is metal filings and dirt finding their way into a liquid that is designed to set the moment it meets metal without air.

How to tell it's gone off


  • Threadlocker that has thickened from a free-running liquid into a syrup or a gel.
  • Gritty specks or seeds suspended in the liquid — cured particles that started on contamination.
  • A nozzle plugged with a solid bead that keeps coming back after it is cleared.
  • A tube that has gone rigid, or one whose cap has bonded itself shut.
  • Read the lot code on the tube: Loctite prints the last digit of the year of manufacture followed by a letter for the month, so a code beginning 1B is February 2021.

If you use it anyway


Equipment damage

Threadlocker that has lost strength is a fastener that comes loose. The bolt goes in feeling normal and torques up normally, and nothing looks wrong until vibration walks it out — on a mower deck, a bike stem, an alternator bracket or a valve cover, that is a broken machine rather than a wasted afternoon. If the tube is thick, gritty or gelled, treat it as finished.

Why it goes off — ANAEROBIC CURE IN THE TUBE

Threadlocker is a dimethacrylate ester that, in Loctite's words, cures anaerobically — when there is an absence of air between close-fitting metal surfaces. That is the trick and also the weakness: what keeps it liquid on the shelf is dissolved air, and what sets it off is metal with the air excluded. So a tube contaminated with steel or brass swarf, or one kept warm enough to speed the reaction along, can start thickening and seeding where you cannot see it. Heat is the accelerator, which is why Loctite's optimal band tops out at 70°F.

How to store it


Loctite's storage line is short and worth following exactly: not damaged by freezing, close the tube tightly after each use, and store the product in the unopened container in a dry location, with optimal storage between 46°F and 70°F. A hot shelf is the enemy here rather than a cold one, and a tube that has been used near a lathe or a grinder should be capped straight away so nothing metallic finds its way in.
