There is no printed date to read: SC Johnson publishes no shelf-life figure for a Raid aerosol, and Purdue notes that US pesticide manufacturers generally do not print expiration dates at all. The number here is the industry's design window from that same extension guidance — formulations built to stay chemically and physically stable for at least two to three years in their original, sealed packages, which for an aerosol means an undischarged can.

An aerosol has no opened state — the valve is the seal, and a half-used can is as closed as a full one. What ends it is hardware: a nozzle dried shut, a can that has bled its charge, or one that has been somewhere hot. The safety data sheet sets the only limit that matters in a shed: protect from sunlight, and do not expose to temperatures exceeding 50°C / 122°F.

How to tell it's gone off


  • A can that feels light for its size, or sounds hollow and sloshy when tipped.
  • A nozzle crusted or blocked with dried product.
  • Rust, denting or any bulge in the can, particularly around the rim and base.
  • Where it has been kept: a can that has sat above 122°F is outside what its own safety data sheet permits.

If you use it anyway


Degraded performance

A wasp spray that has aged in the can usually fails as hardware rather than as chemistry — a dried nozzle or a can that has lost its charge, so the jet is short or does not come at all. That is a performance failure: it does not work, and you stop. The thing to take seriously is not age but heat. The safety data sheet's limit is a hard one, because this is a pressurized container that contains gas under pressure and may explode if heated.

Why it goes off — THE CAN, NOT THE CHEMICAL

The insecticide inside is the durable part; the delivery system is not. Propellant leaks past a valve slowly over years, residue dries in the nozzle between uses, and a can that has cycled through summer heat in an uninsulated shed has been pushed past what its own safety data sheet allows. The result is a can that looks fine and throws a dribble instead of a jet.

How to store it


The safety data sheet's terms: out of sunlight, in a well-ventilated place, locked up, and never above 50°C / 122°F. Because it is a pressurized container, the sheet's other instruction stands for the whole life of the can — do not pierce or burn it, even after use.
