Does pesticide concentrate expire?

Slowly. Bonide says most chemical companies formulate a product to last a minimum of 2 years in the container, and Purdue puts the industry's design window at two to three years sealed — after that it fades rather than fails.

Two independent sources land on the same floor. Bonide's guidance is that most chemical companies formulate their products to last a minimum of 2 years in the container. Purdue's extension publication is more precise: manufacturers design formulations to remain both chemically and physically stable for at least two to three years in their original and sealed packages, and that period becomes the unofficial expiration date for most pesticides — because US manufacturers generally do not print one.

Opening the jug is what actually starts the clock. FAO's shelf-life guidance is blunt about it: shelf life declines rapidly after containers have been opened and left partially empty. Purdue's practical version is to keep nothing in inventory for more than three sales seasons and to treat a previously opened package as a reason to look at the liquid before trusting it.

How to tell it's gone off


  • Clumping, or an accumulation on the bottom that will not resuspend when the closed container is gently inverted several times.
  • Separated layers that stay separate.
  • An unusual odor or colour compared with a fresh container of the same product.
  • A hard-packed sediment on the bottom — Purdue's clearest sign that a concentrate is finished.
  • Where it wintered: a jug that has been through a freeze is the one most likely to have crystallized.

If you use it anyway


Degraded performance

An aged concentrate loses strength quietly rather than failing outright. Bonide's own framing is that pesticides do not lose their pest-control powers all at once — instead of being 100 percent effective after several years, they may perform at only 70 to 80 percent. That is a treatment that half works and has to be done over. The one jug that is genuinely finished is the one that has separated or thrown a sediment that will not go back into suspension.

Why it goes off — SETTLING & SEPARATION

The active ingredient is usually the durable part — Purdue's summary is that actives are quite stable in a concentrated formula sealed in the container. It is the supporting cast that goes: the coformulants that hold everything in suspension degrade, a freeze can crystallize the active and drop it to the bottom, and heat and humid air work on both. What you are left with is a jug where the strength has stopped being evenly spread through the liquid.

How to store it


Bonide's storage sentence is the one to follow: store products in their original containers in a cool, dark, dry place, such as a locked cupboard in a garage or a shaded storage shed, with an ideal range of 50 to 75°F. Bonide also warns off the two places people actually keep them — inside the house, and a metal shed that swings between extremes.
