Does silicone spray expire?

The silicone barely changes — it is one of the most stable things on the shelf — but the can is rated, not the fluid: CRC warrants 2 years from the date code stamped on every aerosol it makes.

CRC's answer covers its whole catalog: "All CRC products have a conditional warranty of two years from date of manufacture," and the company's date-code sheet calls the same period a conditional warranted shelf life. Read that as the window CRC will stand behind, not the day the spray stops working — a silicone fluid has no oxidation clock of its own.

There is no opened state for an aerosol — the valve is the seal and it closes again after every press. The window runs from the date the can was filled either way. What actually shortens it is heat and sun: 3M's safety data sheet for its silicone lubricant asks for a well-ventilated place, out of sunlight, and never above 50°C / 122°F.

How to tell it's gone off


  • A can that spits, dribbles or hisses in ordinary use instead of laying down an even fan.
  • The can feels heavy but sprays nothing — propellant gone, fluid stranded.
  • A crusted or blocked nozzle. A fresh straw brings most of these back.
  • Check the date code CRC prints on the can against the 2-year window it warrants.
  • Rust or corrosion around the rim, seam or base — a container fault, not a contents fault.

If you use it anyway


Degraded performance

A can of silicone spray that still sprays is as good as the day it was filled; silicone does not go off in the can. What fails is the delivery — propellant past the seal, a crusted valve — and one day the button gives you a hiss instead of a fan. CRC only warrants 2 years from the date code and makes no claim beyond it, so the honest expectation past that is a can that may quietly do nothing. Wasted effort and a redo; nothing damaged, nothing dangerous.

Why it goes off — PROPELLANT & VALVE AGING

Silicone fluid is not a drying oil. It does not oxidize into varnish, it does not gum, and it does not separate the way a compounded product does. The clock runs on the package instead: propellant escapes past the valve seal over years, the nozzle can crust with dried carrier, and warmth pushes both along. A can that has lost its charge is full of perfectly good silicone that cannot get out.

How to store it


3M's safety data sheet is the concrete one: keep the can in a well-ventilated place, tightly closed, protected from sunlight, and never let it sit above 50°C / 122°F. CRC's contribution is the date code on the can — it is the only way to know which of two identical cans on the shelf is the old one.
