Does brake cleaner expire?

The solvent does not, but the can is rated and the numbers are short: 3M gives an unopened can of its brake cleaner 12 months, and CRC warrants 2 years from the date code on the bottom.

3M's data sheet for High Power Brake Cleaner is exact: "When stored at the recommended conditions in original, unopened containers, this product has a shelf life of 12 months." CRC puts a conditional 2-year warranty on everything it makes and repeats it as a conditional warranted shelf life from the date of manufacture. Both figures rate the aerosol, not the chemistry inside it.

A can has no opened state — the valve reseals after every press, so the window runs from the fill date whichever way you look at it. A jug is different: bulk brake cleaner loses its lightest solvent to the air every time the cap is off, and the headspace that replaces it carries moisture and dust back in.

How to tell it's gone off


  • A can that fans out weakly or dribbles in ordinary use instead of throwing a hard, straight stream.
  • The can feels full but nothing comes out — the propellant has gone and the solvent is stranded.
  • Rust or corrosion around the rim, seam or base of the can.
  • Read the date code on the bottom of the can, decoded below, against the maker's window.
  • In a jug: cloudiness, a settled layer, or a water film that was not there when it was new.

If you use it anyway


Degraded performance

A brake cleaner that still sprays cleans exactly as well as it did new — the solvent does not go off. The failure is the can, and both published numbers are numbers about the can: 12 months unopened from 3M, 2 years from the date code from CRC. Past those, plan for a can that spits, dribbles or does nothing at all. What that costs you is the job you were about to start, not the parts you were going to clean.

Why it goes off — PRESSURE LOSS, NOT SPOILAGE

A brake cleaner works because its solvent blend reacts with almost nothing — which is exactly why it does not spoil sitting still. The aging is mechanical. Propellant leaks past the valve seal, the valve stem can crust, the can's seams corrode in a damp corner, and a hot shelf accelerates all three. When makers publish a shelf life for one of these, they are publishing a number for the package.

How to store it


3M's storage line is two sentences long: store at room temperature, and rotate stock on a first-in, first-out basis so the oldest can leaves the shelf first. CRC supplies the means to do that — a date code stamped on the bottom of every aerosol it makes.

Reading the CRC Industries date code


On a CRC aerosol the code is stamped on the bottom of the can. Since July 2007 it reads as five digits: two for the year, then three for the day of that year — 001 is January 1, 035 is February 4, 365 is December 31. CRC publishes the format and its own worked example.
