Does lamp oil go bad?

Sealed, effectively never — Firefly states paraffin lamp oil lasts indefinitely in a sealed container. The cap, not the calendar, decides the opened bottle.

Firefly's answer is as clean as they come: the shelf life of paraffin lamp oil is indefinite if it is stored in a sealed container at room temperature. Highly refined paraffin has none of gasoline's light, reactive fractions to lose.

After opening: Years — cap it tight Tier 1

An opened bottle keeps for years if the cap goes back on properly — Firefly's guidance is that a properly replaced cap ensures maximum shelf life. Evaporation and whatever falls into an open bottle are the only clocks. Note the cold limit: liquid paraffin solidifies around 15°F; Firefly says it should still burn after thawing, but oil that has turned cloudy and thick is past its prime.

How to tell it's gone off

  • Cloudy or noticeably thickened oil — Firefly's own sign that a bottle is past its prime.
  • Debris or a dusty film in a bottle that sat open.
  • A wick that chars and smokes where it used to burn clean.

If you use it anyway

Degraded performance

Old lamp oil doesn't hurt anything but the evening: cloudy, thickened oil wicks poorly, burns dim and smoky, and fouls the wick sooner. The fix is a fresh bottle and a trimmed wick, not a repair bill.

Why it goes off — EVAPORATION & CLOUDING

Paraffin barely oxidizes at room temperature, so the failure modes are physical: slow evaporation through a loose cap, dust and moisture getting in, and hard freezes that can leave the oil cloudy and thickened.

How to store it
