Does kerosene expire?
Sealed 1-K kerosene keeps a year or two, but heater makers are blunt about the opened can: never carry last season's kerosene into the next one.

Sealed: 1–2 years Tier 3
Trade guidance for K-1 grade kerosene puts a properly sealed container at 1–2 years as the conservative figure, stored cool, dry and out of sunlight in a container made for kerosene. Longer is possible; fresher always burns cleaner.
After opening: One heating season Tier 1
Once the can is in use, the working rule comes from the people who build the heaters: Mi-T-M's storage guidance is 'never store leftover kerosene over the summer — using old fuel can damage your heater.' Buy what a season needs and start the next one fresh.
How to tell it's gone off
- Fresh 1-K is water-clear — a yellow or darkened cast means it has aged.
- Cloudiness, or a visible water layer at the bottom of the container.
- A sour smell instead of the ordinary oily kerosene smell.
- Sediment or stringy sludge when the container is swirled.
If you use it anyway
Equipment damage
The manufacturer's own word is 'damage': old kerosene fouls the wick and burner, hardens wicks, and drops the burn quality — and a heater burning poorly is also a smellier, sootier heater in the room. The fuel is the cheap part; the heater and the air quality are not.
Kerosene slowly absorbs moisture, and microbes feed at the fuel–water boundary through a warm summer, leaving sludge behind. Degraded kerosene then clogs and hardens wicks, burns low and smells — which is why the season rule exists.
Every page here commits to one of four states — Harmless · Degraded performance · Equipment damage · Safety issue. How the verdicts work.
How to store it
In a container made and marked for kerosene, tightly capped, in a cool, dry, ventilated spot away from living space, heat and sunlight — and sized to one season's use, so nothing is left to carry over.
