Does fuel stabilizer expire?

Yes — Gold Eagle rates an unopened bottle of STA-BIL at up to five years and an opened one at two, which makes the stabilizer longer-lived than any fuel it protects.

Sealed: About 5 years Tier 1

Gold Eagle states an unopened bottle of STA-BIL is good for up to five years — the factory seal limits oxygen exposure, which is the product's own aging clock.

After opening: 2 years Tier 1

Once the bottle is opened, Gold Eagle recommends using it within two years, tightly capped and kept cool and dry. Past that, the additive package fades — the bottle looks fine but protects less.

How to tell it's gone off

  • Sediment or flakes in the bottle — Gold Eagle's own stop sign, at any age.
  • Noticeably darker or cloudier than a fresh bottle.
  • Check the bottle's date code against the two-year window (decoder below).

If you use it anyway

Degraded performance

Old stabilizer is a quiet failure, not a loud one: Gold Eagle says using it past the window has no negative effect on fuel or engine — it may simply do nothing at all. The cost lands next season, when the gas it was supposed to protect turns out not to have been.

Why it goes off — ADDITIVE OXIDATION

A stabilizer is an antioxidant package, and antioxidants spend themselves against air. Every opening of the bottle feeds the reaction, which is why the sealed and opened windows differ by three years.

Every page here commits to one of four states — Harmless · Degraded performance · Equipment damage · Safety issue. How the verdicts work.

How to store it

Gold Eagle's terms: tightly capped, cool and dry. The bottle carries its own production date code on the back — read it before trusting a garage-sale bottle.

Reading the STA-BIL date code

The manufacturer's code on the back of the bottle is a Julian date: the first two digits are the year, the next three are the day of that year (1–365). Gold Eagle publishes the format on its shelf-life page.
