How long does 2-cycle mix last?
Self-mixed fuel and oil is on the gasoline clock — STIHL says use it within 30 days, 60 at the outside — while factory-canned premix is rated for years.

Sealed: 30–60 days (self-mixed) Tier 1
The oil in the mix does nothing to slow the gasoline's aging. STIHL's recommendation is not to store or use fuel older than 60 days, and preferably no longer than 30 — even with stabilizer added. Canned ethanol-free premix is the exception: TruFuel rates its sealed cans at more than 5 years, and STIHL gives MotoMix a storage life of up to two years.
| Brand | Sealed window |

| Self-mixed pump gas (STIHL guidance) | 30–60 days |
| TruFuel 2-cycle (canned) | 5+ years sealed |
| STIHL MotoMix (canned) | Up to 2 years |
After opening: 30–60 days Tier 1
An opened jug of self-mixed fuel ages exactly like the pump gas it was made from, and faster with every opening. Opened canned premix keeps far longer — TruFuel states a minimum of 2 years from opening with the cap resealed.
How to tell it's gone off
- Darker than the day it was mixed — most mixes shift from their dyed colour toward brown.
- A sour varnish smell from the jug.
- Visible separation or cloudiness instead of a uniform blend.
- Gum residue where drips have dried on the spout.
If you use it anyway
Equipment damage
Stale mix is how good saws and trimmers die: varnish plugs the tiny carburetor passages two-strokes depend on, and STIHL ties stored-fuel problems directly to fuel system failures and expensive engine damage. Mixing fresh is cheaper than a carburetor, and much cheaper than a cylinder.
The mix goes off because the gasoline in it goes off: oxidation builds gum and varnish while the light fractions evaporate. The two-stroke oil stays serviceable long after the fuel around it has staled.

How to store it
A batch sized to the next month of work is the whole trick — self-mixed fuel is best made in amounts that get used before the clock runs out. Keep it in a proper fuel container tightly capped, cool and out of the sun, and label the jug with the mix date, because the date is the whole answer with this one.
