The published figures span the whole range, and the spread is honest rather than sloppy. The cal-hypo safety data sheet says the product has an indefinite shelf life if stored in the original container in a cool, dry place. In The Swim gives properly stored shock more than 5 years — while noting that 1 lb bags absorb moisture from humid air and the bags themselves can dissolve in 12 to 24 months. HTH, writing for pool owners opening a garage in spring, puts properly stored shock at approximately one year.

HTH's guidance for opened oxidizers is to use them within the season you bought them. The reason is in the packaging: In The Swim reports that 1 lb bags absorb moisture from humid air to the point that the bags can dissolve within 12 to 24 months. An opened bucket in a humid garage is on the same path, only faster.

How to tell it's gone off


  • A bag or bucket that feels soft, damp or heavy, or packaging that has begun to break down at the seams.
  • Granules caked into a solid mass rather than pouring loose.
  • Discoloration, or a strong odor coming off a closed container.
  • A lid that has never been fully seated, or an inner liner left untied since last season.

Safety issue

This is the container on the shelf that can actually hurt someone. Calcium hypochlorite pulls moisture out of humid air, and its safety data sheet is explicit about what contaminated product does: contamination with moisture, acids, organic materials and other easily combustible materials such as petroleum, paint products, wood or paper may cause fire or explosion and the liberation of hazardous gases. Wet material may generate nitrogen trichloride, an explosion hazard. HTH says the same thing in one line — getting oxidizers wet can be dangerous, not just ineffective. Shock that is damp, caked, discolored or smelling strongly is a safety matter, and this page stops there.

Why it goes off — MOISTURE UPTAKE

Calcium hypochlorite is a strong oxidizer and a thirsty one — it draws water out of humid air. Dry and sealed it is stable and its shelf life is open-ended. Damp, it is a different substance: the safety data sheet's stability section says wet material may generate nitrogen trichloride, an explosion hazard, and that contact with acids liberates toxic gas.

How to store it


The safety data sheet's own terms: the original container, tightly closed and properly labelled, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, stored away from open flames and combustibles and from acids and ammonia — and never where water can get inside. If the bucket has an inner liner, tie it after each use. HTH adds the garage rule: never store oxidizers near organic chemicals like gasoline.
