Does oven cleaner expire?

The chemistry does not — Reckitt's own sheet calls Easy-Off "stable under recommended storage conditions" — so what runs out first is the can it came in.

Reckitt prints no expiration date on Easy-Off, and its safety data sheet gives the reason: "Chemical stability: Stable under recommended storage conditions." The active is a caustic, and a caustic does not age in a sealed can. What does have a limit is the aerosol around it — the same sheet notes that "aerosol containers are unstable at temperatures above 49°C (120.2°F)" and asks you to "keep from freezing."

An aerosol has no opened state — the valve reseals after every use and the contents never meet room air. A can that has sat for years still holds its caustic at full strength. What it may have lost is pressure, weeping past a tired valve, and a can that has lost pressure lays down a dribble instead of a covering foam.

How to tell it's gone off


  • The can feels light for its size, and sloshes full when you shake it.
  • The spray arrives as a dribble or a spatter rather than a covering foam.
  • The nozzle is crusted or blocked.
  • The can is dented or rusted at the seam, or has been stored somewhere that gets above 120°F — the sheet's own ceiling.

If you use it anyway


Degraded performance

An old can of oven cleaner is a delivery problem, not a chemistry problem. The caustic inside is as strong as the day it was filled. If the can has lost pressure it lays down a thin, patchy coat that never sits on the soil long enough to work, and the job needs doing twice. Nothing about the age of the product makes it harsher on the oven than a new can would be.

Why it goes off — STABLE CHEMISTRY, TIRED CAN

Nothing in a caustic oven cleaner spoils. The safety sheet's stability line is flat — "stable under recommended storage conditions" — so the failure, when it comes, is mechanical: propellant leaking past a valve, or a nozzle dried shut with the residue of the last use. Heat drives both, which is why the can is rated to stay under 120°F.

How to store it


Reckitt's storage section, near enough word for word: "Do not store at temperatures above 49 °C (120.2°F). Keep away from heat, open flames or other sources of ignition. Keep from freezing." An indoor cupboard meets all three; a garage shelf in July does not. The sheet also lists aluminum among the incompatible materials, and warns that the product should not go onto aluminum or painted surfaces, where "damage to these surfaces may occur."

Never store an aerosol oven cleaner anywhere that gets above 120°F.
