Does oil-based paint go bad?

Sealed, it outlasts almost everything else on the shelf — Rust-Oleum rates its oil-based enamel at 5 years — but the day you open the can you start the clock that actually ends it, because an alkyd cures by reacting with air.

Rust-Oleum's data sheet for Stops Rust Enamel Brush, an oil-based alkyd, lists a shelf life of 5 years. Behr's urethane alkyd enamel sheet is far more conservative at two years unopened. The gap is real and worth knowing before you trust a can with no date on it: take 5 years as the ceiling and 2 as the number a cautious maker will stand behind.

Neither maker publishes a separate figure for an opened can, and the reason is that time stops being the variable. An alkyd hardens by reacting with oxygen, so the air trapped over a half-used can cures the top of the paint into a skin while the can sits there. Behr's sheet gives the whole rule in six words — cover unused product to help prevent skinning — and a can left with a loose lid can skin in a single season.

How to tell it's gone off


  • A rubbery skin across the top of the paint — that layer has already cured where it met the air.
  • Skin that tears into flakes when disturbed instead of stirring back in; those flakes end up as bumps in the finish.
  • Paint that has gone thick and stringy and will not level off a stir stick.
  • Hard lumps or a jelly at the bottom that stirring does not break up.
  • Clear solvent floating on top is ordinary settling and stirs back in; a firm layer on top is not.

Degraded performance

Old oil-based paint is a redo, not a wreck. The failure is mechanical: skin flakes and half-cured lumps drag through the film, coverage goes patchy and the paint takes longer to harden than the label says. You can see every bit of that in the can and on the brush before it costs you a surface.

Why it goes off — OXIDATIVE CURE IN THE CAN

Oil-based paint dries by chemistry, not by evaporation: the alkyd resin takes up oxygen and cross-links into a solid film. That reaction does not care whether the paint is on a door or in a can, so wherever paint meets air it starts curing. In a full, sealed can there is almost no air and almost no reaction; in a half-empty one there is a headspace working on the surface every day, which is why a skin forms on top and lumps of half-cured resin end up in the paint underneath.

How to store it


Behr's data sheet names the habit that matters for an alkyd — cover unused product to help prevent skinning — so the job is to leave the paint as little air as possible. Wipe the rim so the lid seats flat all the way round, keep the can somewhere its temperature does not swing, and if a can is nearly empty accept that it is now mostly headspace and will skin faster than a full one.
