Does hydrogen peroxide expire?

Yes, and much faster once the seal is broken — the chemical itself loses under 1% a year in a proper container, but an opened household 3% bottle fades in a matter of months.

Alliance Chemical puts an unopened, properly stored bottle at 1 to 3 years of useful strength. The chemical is capable of far better: Evonik, which manufactures hydrogen peroxide, records "proven losses of less than 1% per year under ambient conditions" for its stabilized commercial grades, and says that "with normal handling and cool storage… the losses of hydrogen peroxide are very slight even during extended periods (years) of storage." What shortens it in a cupboard is the packaging and the warmth, not the molecule.

After opening: 1–6 months Tier 3


Alliance Chemical's figure for an opened household-strength 3% bottle is 1 to 6 months before the strength fades noticeably. Every opening admits light and airborne contamination, and peroxide is unusually easy to set off: Evonik names iron, copper, manganese, nickel and chromium as "especially effective" at driving decomposition, alongside UV light and certain enzymes.

How to tell it's gone off


  • No fizz. Fresh peroxide foams the moment it meets grime on a surface; spent peroxide sits there.
  • The bottle feels tight, or the cap gives a small pop — decomposing peroxide gives off oxygen gas.
  • It has been living in a clear bottle or a bright spot, which is the light exposure Evonik lists as a decomposition route.
  • The date printed on the bottle has passed.

If you use it anyway


Degraded performance

Peroxide that has gone over is water with a label on it. It does no harm to the surfaces it is rated for and it does not become hazardous — it simply stops working, and the failure is invisible in the bottle. Full, clear, and doing nothing looks exactly like full, clear, and working.

Why it goes off — SELF-DECOMPOSITION

Hydrogen peroxide is water carrying an extra oxygen atom it would rather not carry, and it sheds it — breaking down into water and oxygen with no help from anything. Heat, light, a rising pH and a trace of the wrong metal all speed that up; Evonik notes the pH window is tight enough that "above pH 5, the decomposition increases sharply." A bottle that has run its course is water.

How to store it


Alliance Chemical's terms: cool and dark, below 86°F, in its original amber or opaque bottle with the cap secured. The brown bottle is doing a job and a clear one is not a substitute. Evonik supplies the reason behind the rule — heat and metal contamination are what drive the decomposition — and Alliance is blunt about one habit in particular: never put decanted peroxide back into the original bottle, because whatever it picked up will keep working on what is left.
