Motorcraft publishes shelf life against constant ambient storage temperature: 36 months at the cool end of the table, 18 months at a constant 77°F, and down to 2 months at a constant 104°F. Its worked example puts an area averaging 95°F at 6 months. Above all of it sits one line in capitals — under no circumstances should DEF be kept for more than 3 years. Old World Industries, which makes PEAK BlueDEF, says properly stored DEF lasts at least two years, and DEF exposed to heat about one.

Neither maker publishes a separate figure for an opened jug, because the clock is temperature and it runs from the production date either way. What opening adds is contamination. DEF is 67% deionized water and 33% pure urea, and the standard it has to meet is a purity standard — so dust in the neck of the jug or a nozzle that has been used for something else is what ends it early, not age.

How to tell it's gone off


  • Read the date stamped on the jug. Motorcraft counts shelf life as time past that code, which is printed as six digits — month, day, then year.
  • A change in color. DEF is a clear fluid, and Old World Industries calls any color change a sure sign it has been contaminated.
  • Cloudiness or particles in fluid that should be water-clear.
  • White crystals around the cap or spout are not a fault — Old World Industries says those are dried drips of fluid that met the air.
  • A jug that has spent a summer in direct sun, which is the single condition both makers warn cuts the window hardest.

If you use it anyway


Degraded performance

Aged DEF is a performance problem, not a damage one, and Motorcraft is unusually direct about why. Past the shelf life the risk it names is a product that does not meet what is advertised on the label; the only consequence it gives for a urea concentration below 32% is faster consumption, with a dashboard warning if the fluid drifts far enough. The fluid does not attack the system it feeds. Contaminated DEF is a separate story — but that is something that got into the jug, not age.

Why it goes off — HEAT-DRIVEN UREA BREAKDOWN

DEF is urea dissolved in deionized water, and heat slowly pushes the urea back apart. That is why the shelf life is a table and not a number: the same jug is good for 18 months at a constant 77°F and 6 months where the average day runs 95°F. Cold is not the enemy — the fluid freezes below 12°F and thaws unharmed.

How to store it


Motorcraft's terms: out of direct sunlight — shaded if it has to be outside — and below 86°F (30°C) where that is possible, in the coolest part of the space. DEF freezes below 12°F (-11°C), and Old World Industries says a frozen jug is not a spoiled one: the fluid is unaffected once it thaws. Keep the container, the cap and the fill area clean, because what DEF has to meet is a purity standard.

Reading the Motorcraft date code


Motorcraft states the date code on its DEF jugs is formatted month, day, then two digits of year — six digits in a row. Its own worked example: 022817 is February 28, 2017.
