STIHL states the unopened shelf life for its bar and chain oil as four years in originally sealed containers. It is one of the slower-aging fluids in the shed, and the figure comes from the saw maker rather than from a general lubricant rule.

After opening: Up to 4 years Tier 1

STIHL gives an opened container up to four years as well, but hangs three conditions on it: a firmly closed container, a dark and dry location, and cool constant temperatures up to 25°C/77°F. A jug that has spent its life on a sunny shelf in an unheated shed has not had those conditions, and the number does not apply to it.

How to tell it's gone off

  • Sediment or a settled sludge layer in the bottom of the jug.
  • Oil that has thickened or gone stringy compared with a fresh jug of the same grade.
  • Noticeably darker than fresh oil of the same type.
  • A sour or rancid smell from the container instead of the ordinary heavy-oil smell.
  • A jug that has lived somewhere warm or bright — STIHL's four-year opened figure assumes dark, dry, and up to 25°C/77°F.

STIHL rates it at four years sealed and up to four years opened while the container stays closed, dark and cool; past that the maker no longer stands behind it. Oil that has thickened or dropped its solids no longer clings the way fresh oil does, so the honest cost is lubrication below spec and a job worth redoing — STIHL's language is shelf life, not damage, and this verdict stays inside it.

Why it goes off — SLOW OXIDATION

Bar and chain oil is a heavy, deliberately sticky oil — the cling is the whole point, since it has to stay on a chain moving at speed. Heavy oil oxidizes slowly, which is why STIHL can offer four years opened. What moves that clock is warmth and light: the opened figure is conditional on dark, dry and constant temperatures, and a jug kept outside those terms ages faster than the number suggests.
